Understanding Philosophy for A2 Level

Nelson Thornes, 2005, 448pp, 0 748 79253 8, £18.50

This book is designed for students taking Philosophy papers with the AQA board.

Written by Keith Maslin, Sue Johnson, Roy Jackson and

the late Rupert Woodfin, my own modest contribution to this

book was the section on A J Ayer's Language, Truth and Logic,

and some editing of work done by Rupert Woodfin.

The topics covered in this book are:

  • The Philosophy of Mind,

  • Political Philosophy

  • The Philosophy of Science.

The texts outlined are:

Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics;

Hume An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding;

Mill, On Liberty;

Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil;

Russell, The Problems of Philosophy;

Ayer, Language, Truth and Logic.

 This is a Nelson Thornes textbook, and a very substantial introduction to three Philosophy topics.

it is not the same style or format as the 'Understand...' titles, which have evolved from Hodder's Teach Yourself series.
